For many students, the start of the new school year is filled with excitement and anticipation: They have new clothes to wear, new teachers and students to meet, and new information to explore. However, some students experience anxiety because their parents can’t afford to purchase new school supplies. For these students, the school year doesn’t start off quite right as they don’t feel prepared to learn and may suffer from self-esteem issues and disenchantment with school as a result.

You can help more Oakland Unified School District students in grades K-12 go back to school equipped with the supplies they need to learn by donating to the 2nd Annual Attend and Achieve Back-to-School Rally 2009.  This year’s main event will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23rd at Oakland City Hall, for our 6-12th grade students which is located at 1 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza.  The backpack distribution will occur at the end of the rally, from 4-5 p.m. to those who are registered with wristbands.

Last year’s Back-to-School Rally was a huge success!  More than 1200 attendees (students and their parents) experienced a day filled with fun and informative activities for the entire family.  This year, due to the financial realities, many families are facing, coupled with the success of last year’s Back to School Rally, we expect to serve even more students. Your contribution will help us show support for the youth in our community.
